قُلۡ يَـٰٓأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ تَعَالَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ كَلِمَةٖ سَوَآءِۭ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَكُمۡ أَلَّا نَعۡبُدَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَلَا نُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُنَا بَعۡضًا أَرۡبَابٗا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَقُولُواْ ٱشۡهَدُواْ بِأَنَّا مُسۡلِمُونَ
Say, “O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah.” But if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]
- This is a message to the ahlul kitaab.
- You tell us about Musa, and Isa and about the Injil and the Torah.
- And we invite you to a fair agreement between us and you, that we only worship Allah and will not make any partner with him.
- The meaning of the use of the word ‘lords’ here according to As-Si’di is on matters of obedience that are only for Allah SWT.
- Similar to the verse in Surah At-Tawbah 9-31 where the verse talks about the people of the book taking their monks and rabbis as Lords besides Allah.
