Ibn Taymiyyah mentions a story about him. He mentioned how the shayateen fool the people into worshipping the awliyah. Something happened to Abdul Qadir Al Jaylani that he narrates:

“He said I saw a throne between the heavens and earth and a voice called out to me saying O Abdulqaadir your lord, I have removed from you all obligations there is nothing fard you have to do anymore and I have made everything haram, halal for you. I have removed from you every wajib everything that is obligatory you don’t have to do anything anymore. I said to him, be disgraced oh enemy of Allah, he then said: This throne and the light just ripped itself apart into pieces. The voice said you were saved from me because of your clemency and your knowledge O Abdul Qaadir. And through this fitnah, this test it was the shaytan through this trick of mine I fooled 70 of the righteous people.”
